I have been an active user of Yahoo Answer lately and checking questions related to
Google Translate. It is interesting how a lot of askers will say it outright, "no Google Translate please!" when they want to translate a foreign language to a language they understand.
I think
Google translator is the best online tool so far since it has more languages compare to other free online translation services, but its accuracy is still questionable for many users.
From experience, when I ask Google to translate a sentence or two, the machine would produce an almost human translation. But if I paste a long paragraph, the translation becomes confusing.
Google translate though allows anyone to paste a whole text from an article, and even a whole web page. But since poor translated sentences are mixed up with almost-human translated texts, the over-all idea seemed to get messed up. Besides, Google's translation approach is based on statistics and not based on grammar rules and vocabularies. So even if a word in a certain language has different meanings, it could just be translated to just one meaning in the whole article.
Google is still working to perfect their translation technology. But could they really do that? Is it possible that one day, human translators be replaced by computers to translate any text in the world. Well, to thinking about it, it is efficient to just have one website, in the future, to translate any language to a language every user understands, compare to hiring more than 100 professional translators. But translations made by native speakers or professional translators are still the best since they apply grammar rules, translate idiomatic expressions, and can define vocabularies.
I suggest, there should be a testimonial page in Google Translate. Where native speakers can certify or vote how accurate the translation is from Google.So at least every user have an idea what is the quality of the translation they are getting. Do you agree?
